and now all of a sudden I have way too much time on my hands, never mind college
series 2, get here already
I have my tablet again :B I need to do something besides portraits
A while back, I set up another tumblr that I’m currently using as a kind of portfolio, but I’m not entirely sure if I’m going to post my “less polished” work there yet
In the meantime, there’s some exclusive work I haven’t posted here, so, uh, you guys should take a look °U°
Working on transferring my next design onto a plate with hardground. I could do a xerox transfer (rubbing toner onto the plate w/ solvent), but I have a lowly inkjet printer so I use chalk and some tedious tracing instead. After everything’s transferred, I’ll wipe off the excess chalk with a damp cloth and trace over the lines again (you see why this is tedious now) with the scribe/etching needle I’m currently wielding like an idiot boss.
ahaha gdi the companion cube is distorted already
I think this is the first time in a long time I haven’t been in the print lab until… ass o’clock. Generally I’ve been on campus until midnight (past 2 if I’m printing with friends), so this is quite the achievement, haha!
Guidelines for my next print! With aquatint, you start out with a surface completely devoid of tone. Any areas you want to stay white get covered with stop-out (this weird, gummy substance that looks and smells like cough syrup), and then the plate goes into the acid bath for a short period of time, which varies depending on the strength of your acid.
As you can see, the tones get darker the longer they’ve been exposed to the acid. Lather, rinse and repeat until you’ve got all your values in!
“Decay of the Senses”, 2011
3-color intaglio on Rives BFK; 5.5”x5.5”
Edition of 10
Obviously it’s very different from what I had planned out originally, but the serendipity is one of my favorite things about printmaking. This set of plates has a very pulp comic/illustration feel going for it and I’m quite pleased with my happy accident (although I probably would have gotten something closer to what I intended if I hadn’t rushed my aquatint :))
“Take This”, 2011
Intaglio tetratych on Rives BFK; 3”x3”/plate, 6.25”x6.25” overall
Edition of 6
“Losing Time”, 2011
Intaglio on Rives BFK; 5”x7”
Edition of 5

Keeping your ink separated is serious business! Get one spot of ANYTHING in your yellow and everything goes to hell.
also, I learned that tack reducer = fancy name for vaseline
Once again I’ve given up on washing my hands, so I just pop some gloves on (we have nitrile gloves in the print lab, I’m very pleased) when I have to handle paper/the presses.

like I said, serious business
The cyan and magenta plates need to be cleaned after every run since ink from the previous plate tends to stick.

Inked, wiped and ready to print! haha I don’t even know what’s going on with that yellow plate there

Putting the cyan plate in place; the yellow and magenta have already been printed. That weight’s holding the other end of the paper down so I can fiddle around without displacing anything (the press does that enough for me anyway)

Baby press! So small and adorable and I want to take it home :(

Try as I might, I always seem to get some ink on the bottom of my plates.

Drying on the rack! There’s a proper preview on the way, along with all the other stuff I’ve done this quarter.
Well, this is done; from here it’s going to be turned into a three-color separation (cyan, magenta, and yellow), one color to a plate. Then, each color is printed one after the other, lightest to darkest on the same sheet of paper to (hopefully) produce a nice color print.
…yeah that doesn’t make sense to me either so here’s a fancy diagram for those of you who share my lack of reading comprehension
